Proximity Detection
Matrix M3 Proximity Detection
The Matrix M3 (Joy Smart Zone) Proximity Detection System uses MSHA Approved Intrinsically-Safe (IS) electromagnetic devices to precisely track individuals within close proximity to mobile mining machinery. The system uses four to six receivers strategically placed on a piece of mobile equipment to receive signals from a cell phone sized transmitter, either worn by individuals working around the machine or built into the remote control of the machine. Each receiver is mounted within a protective metal frame and shielded by several inches of high-strength polycarbonate to protect it from the wear and tear of day-to-day operations. Each transmitter emits an electromagnetic pulse that is recorded by each of the six machine receivers. Comparison of the signal strengths between receivers allows the system to identify the operator's location while working. Matrix M3 allows for two distinct operating zones around the machine, each of which can be easily tailored to a unique piece of equipment. The first and outermost zone is referred to as the 'Warning Zone'. This zone signals the operator, by way of bright LEDs imbedded within the receiver and transmitter, that he/she is getting to close too the machine. The second and innermost zone is referred to as the 'Red Zone' or shutdown zone. When the transmitter enters this zone the M3 system will immediately disable a number of various functions within the machine, including any travel or pivot functions. Matrix M3 will utilize different zones while in different operating modes. At faster speeds operating zones can be increased to increase restriction around the machine, while at slower speeds operating zones can be decreased to effectively operate machinery.
